Circle Nightclub
Circle Nightclub

New York, NY 10036

Circle near Times Square comes with all of the stereotypes (both good and bad) of a Korean nightclub.  Being one of the only true Korean nightclubs in the city, it has a tendency to attract a very fobby Korean crowd.  The women here dress to impress, and a lot of the girls look like they just graduated from college.  Short and slinky dresses are the norm, and for the most part the men also dress to impress. The space is dominated by a large dance floor with two opposing bars above which hang wall-to-wall projection screens playing music videos.  On either side of the dance floor are split levels of seating where patrons can reserve tables for bottle service.  The club gets crowded on weekends and a long wait out front is usually to be expected.  As is common at most NY clubs, large groups of men without ladies will have a tougher time getting in.  The Thursday night crowd is fairly large with a noticeably younger clientele.  The music is good and the DJ usually mixes a wide range of tunes, from Top 40 to Korean pop songs.  Drinks are pricey, although I have heard of drink specials early on Thursday evenings.  If you are in the mood to dance with friends in a large club environment, then Circle is a good option for a weekend night.  It’s usually free for ladies on Friday nights.   If you are a woman, be prepared to be ogled by the many eager men roaming the confines of this space.  With that being said, I have heard a lot of men would go there hoping to score.  The club tends to attract a lot of very attractive Asian women.  That’s why when I’m not dressing my best I won’t go to Circle.  I wouldn’t want to be the ugly duckling there.  So if you are in the mood to meet some men and dance the night away this is a good option.

Maru Lounge
Maru

11 W 32nd St
New York, NY 10001

Taking its cue from the swank lounges of Seoul, this split-level nightspot aims to be upscale and sophisticated. The interior gives off a modern, minimalist vibe. The lower level has a large neon-lit bar with a small open area and a more private lounge space inside covered by white shades. Patrons are predominately Korean as it is located directly in the center of K-town on 32nd street. I have heard comments that drinks here are overpriced, and for the most part these comments are correct. This lounge is pricey unless frequented during its daily happy hour, which runs from 5-8 pm. During this time ladies can take in reasonably-priced drinks for about $5. Check with the bar ahead of time because they often have ladies open bar specials on Thursday nights from 8-9 pm. If you happen to come during the open bar you will have the rare opportunity of seeing a lounge where the women actually outnumber the men. I have been told the fried sea bass is excellent. For $12, they fry fish and present it as 5-6 fish balls. Overall, the food here is reasonable and the drinks are pretty good. This place is a good option to check out with friends who want to relax in a more comfortable lounge environment without the noise and chaos of the club scene. Although drinks are pricey, if you come during its happy hour it is a reasonable option for those on a budget.

Third Floor Cafe

Third Floor Café

315 Fifth Ave.
New York, NY 10016

Located conveniently on the edge of K-town on 32nd Street and Fifth Ave., this Korean nightspot is popular with the young and hip Korean crowd. You will find other Asian groups at the bar, but the scene is predominately Korean. Guests have commented about the good-looking bartenders and hostesses, so that is another reason to frequent this nightspot. Weekends attract a decent crowd, but Thursday nights are when the bar really hits its prime. There are daily drink and food specials from 5-8 pm, when all of the main dinner dishes come with a complimentary drink. The lychee martini is my favorite drink on their menu, but their other drinks are also excellent. Dinner prices are in the range of $10-14 a dish, so it is a very reasonable date spot or pre going-out place with friends. After 8 pm, it’s open bar for the ladies. That is the time when the ladies start to come in. The crowd can be hit-or-miss. At times it can get a little flooded with male clientele and will begin to feel like a Korean sausage party, which is great for us girls, of course. Other times it can be filled with a lot of post-college Korean kids filing in from Jersey and Queens, pre-gaming at Third Floor before heading out to dance at Circle. Overall, pretty great bar/lounge with a young Asian crowd that serves up good drinks with reasonable dinner specials.
