Asia Circle Cocktail Evenings at Leo Bar

www.asiasociety.org/support/specialevents/leobar/

The Asia Society holds a cocktail night the first Friday of every month at the Leo Bar, located on the 1st floor of the Asia Society from 6 to 9 pm.  The events are touted as networking gatherings where you can also tour the gallery from 7:15 to 7:45 pm.  These functions are a nice place to chat and interact with a more refined Asian crowd.  This group tends to be more diverse than other Asian gatherings.  In general, the individuals who come here are intelligent, working professionals.  You will meet a lot of Asians in the finance, accounting, medical and law professions.  Usually, a good balance of guys to girls.  The vibe is pretty conservative at these events.  You’ll fit right in if you enjoy talking about your work history and your career.  The crowd can feel a little stuffy, but that comes with the territory when attending a cocktail party.   The dress is business casual to business formal as almost everyone here comes directly from the office.   There is a cover to attend these events in the range of $10 to $15, which includes a museum admission pass.  There is a small cash bar that features moderately-priced beer and cocktails.  These events are good for networking, and if you’re on the hunt for a more career-minded man, could be a good destination for you.

Asian Event Reviews – YesYas

YesYas Party

YesYas
Promoter: Eric Bang

I have been to a few of the Yesyas events, most recently at the Beekman Hotel and Leela.  In general, all of Eric’s events will include a cover for both men and women ranging from $5 to $15.  Occasionally there will be a short period of time when ladies can get in free, but in general the group charges per head to collect their fees.  The drinks at this event are never happy hour price.  If you do go, make sure you have enough money to pay for full-price drinks.  These events tend to attract a little younger crowd than Oriented and New York Asian Professional, age range 21 to 35 but it also attract a lot more men than women, with the recent gig at Leela probably drawing more than twice as many guys than girls.   While some of you ladies out there may think that’s wonderful, unfortunately most of these men were on the shorter side – I would say about 5 foot 7 on average. This group attracts primarily Asian professionals with a wide age range.  The only problem I have with this group is that they don’t offer many drink specials.  If you are in the mood to have a few drinks and be surrounded by roving groups of men then a Yesyas event would be a good option for you.  I will continue to check out their future events, and will provide updates if I feel the crowd dynamics have changed.

Asian Event Reviews – New York Asian Professionals

New York Asian Professionals

Promoters: Richard Young/ Eric Yeh

This Asian networking group holds monthly events that are usually held on the last Monday of the month.  You can join the group on www.meetup.com or find their facebook group, New York Asian Professionals.  The group strives to create a low-key environment for working Asian professionals to interact and network.  Past events have been held at Manahatta, Von wine bar, and Slate.  There is never a fee to attend one of their monthly events.  The crowd is fairly homogenous, consisting primarily of business professionals in finance, accounting, law and medicine.  Age varies but the majority of attendees tend to be 30+.  As the name would suggest, the group is primarily Asian with a few non-Asian attendees looking to check out the scene and network.  I have found that their events usually have a good ratio of men to women.  Their events are always held on Monday, so they are pretty low key.   A good place to network and meet other like-minded working professionals.  A happy hour held on a Monday usually maintains a pretty tame environment as most people don’t want to go to crazy so early in the week.  The group in general is friendly, and doesn’t create a real intimidating atmosphere.  If you are in the mood to try to meet a nice guy working in one of the previously mentioned professions, these events are a good option for you.   Similar to an Oriented event, I am not sure if you will meet a lot of cute guys here, but you can be certain that he will most likely have a job and be able to take care of you.   And honestly girls, you have the weekend to meet all the jerks in the world, so maybe Monday is a good time to mix it up with some nice guys.

Asian Event Reviews – Oriented NY

Oriented
Oriented NY
www.oriented.com

Oriented holds events throughout the city on the last Thursday of the month.  Events are open to all races, but the crowd is predominately Asian.  The get-togethers are held at various bars and lounges, with recent spots including Vig 27, Aja Asian Bistro, and Pranna.  The group charges $10 for each activity, or $5 if you register online ahead of time.   Their events always include discounted drinks so the cover fee is minimal considering the drink savings.  I find that the Oriented events in general attract a more subdued and mature Asian crowd.  There is usually a good male/female ratio and their events don’t have a meat market feel to them.  These aren’t the clubgoers or party type of Asian person.    The majority of guests are in their late 20s and 30s, working professionals who are looking to socialize with other like-minded individuals.  Oriented always selects restaurants and bars with a casual environment that can offer a nice setting for conversation.  That being said, if you are a single lady out looking to meet Mr. Big, Oriented events probably won’t be the place for you.   But I have heard, the less Americanize women like to go there to find a husband. I have also heard women complain that they don’t meet many good-looking guys, and for the most part that’s probably correct.  That’s why I am still single. :-) Oriented just doesn’t attract that type of guy.  But if you want to socialize and network with a lot of friendly and open-minded Asian professionals, an Oriented event would be a great Thursday option.
